How do I drive safely in the dark?

Not everyone feels comfortable driving in the dark. These tips will help you on your way.

Before your trip:

  1. Take a moment to let your eyes adjust to the dark, especially if you’re coming from a brightly lit space.

  2. Set your navigation system to night mode.

  3. Check your lights: make sure the switch is in the right position.

During your trip:

  1. Keep your eyes focused on your side of the road. It may sound odd, but many people tend to look into the headlights of oncoming traffic.

  2. Is a car behind you with poorly adjusted headlights? You can tilt your rear-view mirror to avoid glare. Check how this works before you set off and adjust it back so you can see traffic behind you.

  3. Drive calmly and watch your speed. In the dark, visibility is lower, so you need more time to see what’s happening around you.

  4. Don’t turn the heating up too high on cold days. It can make you feel drowsy, especially in the dark.

After your trip:

Don’t forget to switch off the lights at the end of your Greenwheels trip. This prevents the car battery from draining. Is the car set to ‘auto’ lights? Then you don’t need to do anything.
